Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple :

Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu stands beautifully in Srirangapatna (Mandya District), a culturally rich town near Mysore city. The name of this town has also been derived from this temple.

The main deity here is Lord Ranganatha who is a manifestation of Lord Vishnu. The idol of the Lord is in resting posture on a bed of serpent Aadi Sesha. Aadi Sesha is said to have seven heads and if often depicted with the Lord Vishnu. It is said that this is one of the biggest idols of Lord Vishnu in a reclining posture. The idol of Goddess Lakshmi be the side of the Lord’s feet can also be seen. Goddess Ranganayaki is considered to be the principal goddess here. Other shrines inside the temple complex are Srinivasa, Ranganayaki, Rama, Narasimha, Sudarshana, Panchamukha Anjaneya, and Gopalakrishna. This temple was built by the Vijayanagara Empire while later Hyder Ali and Hoysala rulers brought some changes to it. Even Mysore Maharajas contributed a lot to its expansion.

According to mythology, Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple is one of the key temples visiting which devotees can attain spiritual salvation. It is believed that the Cauvery River while on her way formed three islands namely Shivanasamudra, Srirangapatna, and Srirangam. Devotees who visit three temples at these places on the same day are sure to attain moksha.

Timings of Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple are from 07.30 am to 01.00 pm. It again opens for devotees in the evenings from 04.00 pm to 08.00 pm.

Dariya Daulat Bagh – Summer Palace of Tippu sultan :

Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace is one of the iconic examples of Indo-Islamic architecture and was also the summer residence of the Mysorean ruler, Tipu Sultan. Currently, the government of Karnataka maintains it as a great tourist spot. The palace is located within a large garden that has a long pathway leading to the palace entry. The pathway is lined with a water body and trees to give it a Grand Entry, much like the

Taj Mahal in Agra. The palace itself is a wooden structure; the walls have murals depicting the wars Tipu Sultan has fought. The palace also houses a museum containing artifacts from a bygone era. For someone keen on history and always wondering how people lived their lives several centuries ago and the pictures and paintings will transport you back in time.

For us, the main attraction of the museum was a scale 3-dimensional map of Srirangapatna. The model gives you a bird’s eye view of this river island surrounded by the Cauvery on all sides and highlighting other important historic places. Tipu Sultan museum contains the clothes and crown, handsomely decked in gold and silver show his royal lifestyle. Several paintings depict the stories of the battles fought by Tipu Sultan and his father Hyder Ali against the British.

If you are interested in the rich history of India, then you must visit this place and experience the grandeur and royalty.  The double floored rectangular in shape, palace, is made of teakwood and is festooned with Islamic art. There are two protuberant balconies in opposite directions, where Tipu Sultan and his officials used to conduct Durbar proceedings, chambers, four small rooms (zenana quarters or the ladies’ rooms) along with a large hall. The wooden ceilings have canvas-painted floral designs. There is also a Ganpati Temple present inside the fort complex, surrounded by gardens, the presence of which highlights Tipu Sultan’s respect for other religions.

Gumbaz Burial Chamber :

The Gumbaz at Srirangapatna is a Muslim mausoleum holding the 3 graves of Tippu Sultan, his father Hyder Ali and his mother Fakr-Un-Nisa are located next to each other. Many of Tippu’s relatives are buried outside the mausoleum in the garden. Most of the grave inscriptions are in Farsi. It was built by Tippu Sultan to house the graves of his parents. The Gumbaz designed in Persian style and uses the Bijapur style of construction with a dome on top of a cubical structure. British allowed Tippu to be buried here after his death in the siege of Srirangapatna in 1799. the graves of Haider Ali and his wife were covered with royal velvet chadars and that of Tipu Sultan had a tiger skin-colored chadar representing him as the Tiger of Mysore. There is a nice landscaped garden around the place. It’s clean and well maintained. Next to the Gumbaz is the Masjid-E-Aqsa, which was also built by Tippu Sultan, which is thronged by several devotees.

The original carved doors of the mausoleum have been removed and are now displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The present doors made of ebony and decorated with ivory were gifted by Dalhousie.

The Gumbaz or the dome is supported by sharply cut black granite pillars. The doors and windows have some nice latticework cut through in stone on the same black granite material. The walls inside are painted with tiger stripes, the colors of Tippu Sultan. Most of the grave inscriptions are in Farsi.

Captain Bailey’s Dungeon :

Captain Bailey’s Dungeon is one place where there seems to be a reversal of history as known by us. yes, this place was maintained to imprison & torture British prisoners. Owned by Tippu Sultan. The guide explained to us, how the British soldiers were chained nude in this dungeon with water from the Cauvery River, flowing just behind this dungeon, being let in through a niche and filled up to their necks. The 8000 tonnes cannon gifted to Tippu from the British army is also strategically placed in the dungeons.

When we went, the place was maintained neat & clean, unlike the usual places where we see a lot of crap strewn around. The best part is that there is no Entry fee for this location.

Jumma Masjid :

The mosque is an easily identifiable structure, located at a  little distance away from the Srirangapatna main entrance. This mosque was built during the time of the Great Tipu Sultan. An ancient mosque but still makes a presence. Its simplicity and the calmness makes it even more beautiful people around are very helpful. Centuries-old, yet standing sturdy and tall, this quaint little mosque is deeply significant & Tipu used to pray here regularly. Must have been a grand structure in his times, but now a bit overshadowed by other structures, the mosque is small in size. The first clear landmark on the skyline as we were on the river bridge approaching the town was the minarets of this grand old mosque.  Very impressive, clean and used for daily prayers regularly by the locals.
